U By Kotex Tween Gathering The Necessities

Over the last couple of months I’ve shared with y’all my plans for talking to my tweenage daughter about first periods.  She has started puberty and may start menstruation within the next year, according to her pediatrician, which jumpstarted me into discussing the basics of periods and digging deeper into her feelings and emotions about the topic.Being an ambassador for U by Kotex Tween has been such a great help in approaching these matters.  Their informative, yet age appropriate site offers general science based answers as well as a bunch of personal stories from young girls telling how they started and their tips for dealing with periods.  On a few occasions, when the period subject arrises, my daughter and I have pulled up U by Kotex Tween to see what other girls have commented about.  With so many different outcomes, my daughter is made aware that anything is possible.  She may or may not have a similar experience.  When her moment does come, she can claim it as her own, and if she feels comfortable, share it with other girls.

Miss M. is more confident now that we’ve talked, however, there is still an understandable apprehension.  When she’ll start is a mystery….the unknown can be scary!  With school just about to begin, there is a fear that it will happen while in class.  We are being proactive by creating a small bag she can discreetly keep in her locker, just in case.  At least she’ll be somewhat prepared and won’t need to feel embarrassed to ask a friend or teacher for a pad…or worse tie a sweater around her waist and hope it will stop, like I did !  The i.c.p bag as M calls it (in case of period), contains a few U by Kotex tween pads and pantyliners sized specifically to fit a smaller tween/teen body, some stain removing wipes, and a few “make me feel better” items like a piece of chocolate, perfume atomizer and lipgloss (a little pampering during this time is always essential!).

A couple hairbands, bandaids, a brush and nail file, like the ones we were given in my pic above will round out her kit.  Although I don’t believe anything ever prepares a gal for her first period, I think this bag will help out.If you have a tween you’d like to talk to about periods, but aren’t sure how to begin, check out U by Kotex Tween for great Tips and Advice.  Find them on Facebook and Twitter, too.  Good Luck!
