Being a Kotex tween ambassador over the last six months has encouraged me to have those uncomfortable yet necessary talks with my daughter about adolescence and starting periods. Armed with valuable information from the Kotex Tween website, I felt more confident preparing my daughter for what to expect when she starts her first period. Its been years since I started my first period which made it easy to lose perspective on what I was feeling at that time. I do remember the embarrassment I felt and frustration from lack of knowledge. My mom was a modest individual and never shared her experiences. I felt like I shouldn’t ask about it and just learn to live with menstruation. Because of this, I have made it a priority to get over my modesty for the sake of my two daughters. My oldest daughter and I have had numerous discussions about what to expect when she starts her first period and beyond. We’ve mulled over the scientific process as well as emotions she’ll feel before, during and after her cycle. We’ve also prepared a kit filled with Kotex tween sized pads, pantyliners and other useful items to help with the transition. She knows how to use all of the items so it will be second nature when she needs them. Sometimes it amazes me how precocious my daughter is. I think I’ve learned a few things from her during this process!!
I don’t claim to know everything, and when my daughter tells me “mom, I’ve started”, I hope I won’t clam up but instead remember some of the tips I’ve learned and be a rock of support and understanding for her. It’s so hard to believe my baby has grown into a young lady, and soon will be a fully grown woman. It’s a new phase of life for her and me as a mom! I’m thankful for every moment I have with my girls, and look forward to bonding with them in womanhood.
