Fun Children’s Literature {One Day I Went Rambling Book Review}

I am a reader. I feel that I am passing this love onto my children. They see me reading books, they read books with me, they want to read me books; it’s all fun and truly quality time. When we find a great book we all get excited and can read it over and over again together. One Day I Went Rambling, by Kelly Bennett & Illustrated by Terri Murphy is definitely one of those read over and over again books that we have been enjoying together!

When Zane goes rambling, his friends call him crazy and refuse to play along. When he finds a shining star, it doesn’t bother him when his friends try to tell him it’s just a hubcap. Undaunted, Zane uses his finds to create a secret project that piques his friends’ curiosity. After watching him ramble around the neighborhood, finding magic in the ordinary, his friends are eventually drawn into his imaginative game. Through the book’s art, attentive readers will see that Zane is using his finds to create a pirate ship, and once his friends realize what he’s up to, even the most skeptical realists join the fun and sail the afternoon away. Zane’s imagination sees the cowpoke’s lasso in a piece of vine, the pirate’s golden ring in an old pop top, and many other treasures that have been stolen from today’s children by electronic entertainment. Rambling enforces the joy of imaginative play.

Ava loves the book One Day I Went Rambling! As soon as she saw the colorful artwork on the cover she was hooked and wanted to know what it was all about! She loves reading and so a new book is like Christmas morning to her. She sat intently listening to this story, asking questions along the way. When we reached the end, she immediately asked for me to read it to her again. Zane is a truly loveable character with a huge imagination and strong spirit, much like my Ava. He marches to the beat of his own drum and gets all of his friends marching and having fun right along with him on his imaginative journeys; finding interesting odds and ends, then creating stories about them. Not only is this book a great read, but can also be turned into a fun game you can play with your children. We have played the Rambling game several times outside and even inside on rainy days! This story is wonderful and the illustrations are outstanding. One Day I Went Rambling is definitely a must have for your children’s library!

Kelly Bennett is the award-winning author of many books for children including Not Norman: A Goldfish story, and most recently: Your Daddy Was Just Like You and Your Mommy Was Just Like You. She holds a Master’s Degree in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Learning Together {Because Your Mommy Loves You review & giveaway}

There is nothing like the love between a mother and her son. As a mother of a son, I can personally attest to it… although I’m pretty sure it’s probably similar for daughters too! :-) My little guy and I love reading together. I’ve been reading to him since he was only a couple months old, and I’m very happy that he has a great love for books, even at only 19 months. I do my very best to always stop what I’m doing when he brings me a book to read, and of course there are plenty of stories before bed too!

We were recently generously given the opportunity to add to our collection with a new title from  Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, “Becuase your Mommy loves you.” This is a new companion book to “Because Your Daddy Loves You”.

When a little boy and his mom go camping, mini-disasters abound, and there are
lots of opportunities for Mom to step in and fix everything. But instead, with a loving
touch, this mommy shows her child ways to do things for himself, going far to encourage
her child’s independence. And there is still plenty of opportunity for snuggling
under the stars.
This warm and humorous testament to all the loving things a supportive mom does
each day is every bit as heartwarming as its predecessor and is sure to become a favorite
for families everywhere.

This is the sweetest little book! I loved the simple story line, so even youngsters like my little guy understand it! The adventures the little boy gets into are just what any little boy might encounter in the woods, so it would be a great addition for someone who loves being outside. Also, going into summer and camping season, what better way to teach your children about being independent than with a great book about hiking and camping adventures?! The illustrations are so clever too! They really bring the story to life and are funny too! There’s even a picture where, after the mommy helps her son make the perfect mashmallow roasting stick, hers breaks and falls off into the fire!!  I am so looking forward to when my little guy can actually understand the adventures the book tells about, so that we can go on our own hiking and camping trip and be like the boy and his mommy! This is a great book from a great author and illustrator. Andrew Clements is the author of many best-selling books, among them the middle grade novel Frindle. He lives in Westborough, Massachusetts, and can be found at www.andrewclements.com. R. W. Alley is the illustrator of many beloved picture books, including the Paddington Bear series. He lives in Barrington, Rhode Island. Visit him at www.rwalley.com. Thanks Houghton Mifflin Harcourt! “Because Your Mommy Loves You” can be found where other Houghton Mifflin Harcourt titles are available!

amazing woman. her beautiful book. {Heaven is Here: An Incredible Story of Hope, Triumph, and Everyday Joy}

Stephanie Nielson is an inspiration to so many. I stumbled upon her blog, The Nie Nie Dialogues a few years back when I kept seeing little ‘Nie Nie badges’ on the sidebars of many of my favorite blogs. I would click on them and they would take me to her pretty fantastic personal blog. Her story. At this time, she had just been in a terrible plane crash with her husband and they were both in the process of recovery. I sat that first night and discovered her jewel of a blog and read back through so many posts, unable to imagine all that she and her family were going through. What struck me most about Mrs. Neilson was her joy for life in her blog posts. She wrote about her daily life with her children, her family, and her faith. I spent and still spend many nights praying for Stephanie and her family as she is continuing to recover. One thingI know, is she is an amazing mother that lives for her children and husband and the Lord. When I saw she had written a book, Heaven is Here: An Incredible Story of Hope, Triumph, and Everyday Joy, I knew I needed to read it!

Based on her immensely popular blog, Stephanie Nielson’s inspiring memoir explores how, in the wake of a near fatal plane crash, she comes to embrace, more than ever before, the power of love, motherhood, community, faith, and the simple joys of everyday life.

Heaven is Here is a poignant and inspirational memoir that chronicles Stephanie Nielson’s love affair with her husband, Christian, her fulfilling motherhood with her four young children, and her Mormon faith and close-knit community—the components of a very happy life Stephanie began blogging about in 2005.

However, their lives changed forever when Stephanie and Christian were in a horrific plane crash in 2008—he was burned over 40 percent of his body; she over 80 percent and wasn’t expected to live—and they needed the strength of their family and friends, their faith and their love for one another, more than ever. In the aftermath of harrowing tragedy Stephanie has maintained a stunning sense of humor, optimism, and resilience—a strength of spirit that infuses her very popular blog.

Riveting and uplifting, Heaven is Here offers a gripping account of the crash and the aftermath. With her trademark wit and good cheer, Stephanie will share the wisdom and insights she’s gleaned in the wake of her near-death experience and offer readers inspiration for how they too can find the best in themselves and embrace the joy and beauty of the journey, no matter what life throws at them. In the vein of The Middle Place and Saving Graces, Stephanie’s book will be a moving and poignant reminder of how faith and family, love and community can bolster us, sustain us, and quite literally in some cases, save us.

Heaven Is Here: An incredible story of hope, triumph, and everyday joy is a must read. This book tells Stephanie and Christian Nielson’s {Nie Nie} story, starting all the way back in their teen years. She shares their love story from the very beginning and details about their family life together. She writes of the horrific plane crash they were in and her recovery process. Physical and mental. Stephanie’s story is one of strength, faith, and family. Throughout this book all I kept thinking about was how every day is a gift. To live in each day present and happy. Stephanie shares many of the struggles she faced immediately after the accident and challenges she still faces today. Through her beautifully written book I feel like she has given anyone that reads it’s pages a gift. She shows how strong the human spirit can be and how amazing life is. Heaven Is Here: An incredible story of hope, triumph, and everyday joy is an incredible memoire written by an inspirational woman.

You can pick up your own copy of Heaven Is Here: An incredible story of hope, triumph, and everyday joy online & keep up with Nie Nie herself on her blog & facebook page!

When it comes to birthday presents, I really love to give something that has meaning. Depending on the person, that can be super hard… Dad!! The World Is As Big As Your Imagination {Phaidon Press children’s books review}

I love to read! As a kid I remember some of my favorite books and looked forward to reading them over and over. I think (hopefully!) that my little munchkin may have the same love for books! He may be only 15 months, but he LOVES books! He spends loads of time everyday looking through his collection, meticulously flipping each page and looking at the pictures. It really melts my heart when he actually brings me the book and wants to crawl up into my lap so I can read it to him! We also love our story time every night before bed and have to have at least 3 or more stories before bed.  (I could probably get away with only one or two but I LOVE reading to him!!) We recently had the chance to add to our library. Phaidon Press was very generous and sent us some of their new releases in their fabulous children’s collection. I have to say I am very impressed by the creativity and especially the illustrations in the books! We received some for older children as well as younger ones, so I have only been able to read the younger ones to my little guy so far. We especially loved “Bugs in the Garden,”  by Beatrice Alemagna, which had illustrations using felt board characters, and also “What color is your world?”, by Bob Gill, which has very creative ideas for teaching kids about colors and what they relate to. I can’t wait for my little guy to get older so we can explore the other books we received! Thanks Phaidon Press!! A couple of the other gals had the same opportunity to try out the books as well. Here’s what they had to say.

“If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales” ~ Albert Einstein
I believe Albert Einstein was most definitely on to something when he said this, only I believe he could have said, “If you want your children to be intelligent, read to them.” Fairy tales, nursery rhymes, fiction, biographies, a cereal box…just read to them. Phaidon Books sent our family several of their children’s titles to read and add to our ever growing library! My children love books and the time we spend together reading them! They were overjoyed with the lot of books they received from Phaidon Books! I mean, really, they spoiled them rotten and we were all so excited! Hollis’ favorite of the bunch is What Colour is your World? By Bob Gill. It is a fun book with whimsical illustrations that is a cute read and can be used to teach colors and even color words to children! Hollis loves sitting in my lap looking at the pages and naming the colors and objects he sees! We also received the Mellops series by Tomi Ungerer including The Mellops go Diving for Treasure, The Mellops Strike Oil, and Christmas Eve at the Mellops’. Ava loves this series and has requested them many nights for her bedtime story. They keep her interested and she loves listening to the story and asking lots of questions throughout! We have had the most fun with Doodle Cook, by Herve Tullet! Ava loves sitting with me and following the instructions as I read them to her! We do a few pages at a time or until she is through! It is so cute to see what she creates on each page, and she really has created a few masterpieces! I’m sure Mr. Tullet would be proud! Phaidon has a children’s book line is full of great titles, all containing great stories and unique illustrations! We love the books we received and look forward to more time reading together!

Amanda

We love books! My kids love to read, and it has always been something (as a mom) that has been important to me for my children.  The books we received from Phaidon Press were perfect for my kids! They ranged from “Nicholas” which is a great chapter book for older kids to “Bugs in the Garden” which is a sweet little book for younger children.   The ones that I have read with Mia have been darling.  She loved all of the pictures and thought What Color is Your World was silly.  I think our very favorite book was Doodle Cook, which is an interactive book where you help create the dish according to the recipe.  There are all kinds of fun directions which leads to a delightful picture on the page that your child created!  April absolutely loved that book!  Hailee and Austin are reading Nicholas and think Nichlas is funny and naughty, but do occasionally come to me with a question (they get confused on a few words since it is a English)  All in all, we were more then thrilled with the selection of book Phaidon Press.  Everyone of them was wonderful!  We loved everyone of them!!

Erin

Be sure to check out the other titles in the children’s collection available through Phaidon’s website!! You won’t be disappointed! These children’s books come REAL Mom Recommended and I’m so excited to continue the adventures of reading with my little guy!

Quirky, fun finds! {Knock Knock Review}

I was quick to fall in love with Knock Knock and their quirky and fun product line when I gifted my sweet niece their This or That book for Christmas! I was so excited to give it to her and she was thrilled to receive it! It’s a simple book with cute illustrations and on each page offers a choice between two things and then asks for details about the one you choose! Cute and I think it kept her a bit busy over the holiday break, too! I stumbled upon it in a local shop, but had to check out their website. I found so many more unique items I would love to have myself and will also keep up my sleeve as gift giving ideas for friends, young and old!

Knock Knock was founded on January 1, 2002, by Jen Bilik, with the mission of creating interesting, smart, well-designed gift and stationery products, along with anything else that might strike the Knock Knock fancy.

Our sensibility is proudly distinct, in contrast to the overwhelming homogenization and conservatism that characterize committee-created corporate product. We believe that many people are intelligent enough to appreciate wit, wordplay, and conceptual thinking, so we strive not to dumb down as we create.

At Knock Knock we enjoy our work and delight in infusing our product with the fun we feel while making it. We operate out of light-filled loft studios in Venice, California, a fantasy locale if ever there was one. Our team now numbers fifteen—a lean, productive group of amazing people who do everything from creating our products and books to overseeing the all-important logistical dynamics of manufacturing, sales, and distribution.

I was so excited to receive a couple of  my favorite items from Knock Knock; something for the small ones and something for myself! Yay! Knock Knock generously sent my littles their Let’s Pretend Pad; A notepad that encourages your child to use their imagination and create a pretend play idea! It is totally cute and Ava has loved thinking up fun pretend play ideas using her Let’s Pretend Pad as a guide {with my help, too, of course}! Since we received it, it has quickly become her favorite play activity; she has quite a wild imagination and I love how it shines through when she is creating these wild pretend ideas! They also included a few pages of various stickers at the back, which we all know is pretty much the key to any child’s heart! Definitely a sweet touch to an already fantastic product! I also love that I can keep these funny little play scenarios in her baby book and we can look back on them as she gets older! I was so happy to receive the Money Spent Pocket Notes; a nifty little pocket pad small enough to fit in your purse or pocket allowing you to track your money and see where the cash in your wallet is spent. I am on a mission this year to spend less and save more; really keep a close eye on my spending. It seems like cash just dissapears from my wallet these days and I am happy to have this little book to help me track it all and see exactly where it is going. I’m sure it will make me a bit more aware of my spending and help me to make better decisions with our money! Knock Knock has so many amazing products, everything from sticky notes, note pads, stationary, journals, even specialty flash cards {Slang Flashcards to be specific, that can help you learn & understand the tricky tongue of the teens! So great!}! Knock Knock offers a wonderful variety; you are sure to find a perfect gift for yourself or someone else!

You can find Knock Knock products online as well as at a few local shops!

Check out Knock Knock on Twitter and Facebook, where you can keep up with the latest product news and information straight from Knock Knock!

Looking for a great Holiday Gift for the “Teen Boy” in your family or home?

Give the gift of reading.  Books are a great gift and we have three that we want to showcase to you today:

——————————–
The Eleventh Plague

“The Eleventh Plague hits disturbingly close to home…An excellent, taut debut novel.” – Suzanne Collins, author of The Hunger Games

In the aftermath of a war, America’s landscape has been ravaged and two thirds of the population left dead from a vicious strain of influenza. Fifteen-year-old Stephen Quinn and his family were among the few that survived and became salvagers, roaming the country in search of material to trade for food and other items essential for survival. But when Stephen’s grandfather dies and his father falls into a coma after an accident, Stephen finds his way to Settler’s Landing, a community that seems too good to be true, where there are real houses, barbecues, a school, and even baseball games. Then Stephen meets strong, defiant, mischievous Jenny, who refuses to accept things as they are. And when they play a prank on the town bully’s family that goes horribly wrong, chaos erupts, and they find themselves in the midst of a battle that will change Settler’s Landing forever.

——————————————

Underdogs

Before The Book Thief, Markus Zusak wrote a trilogy of novels about the Wolfe brothers: The Underdogs, Fighting Ruben Wolfe, and Getting the Girl. Cameron and Ruben Wolfe are champions at getting into fights, coming up with half-baked schemes, and generally disappointing girls, their parents, and their much more motivated older siblings. They’re intensely loyal to each other, brothers at their best and at their very worst. But when Cameron falls head over heels for Ruben’s girlfriend, the strength of their bond is tested to its breaking point.

——————————————

iBoy

Before the attack, Tom Harvey was just an average teen. But a head-on collision with high technology has turned him into an actualized App. Fragments of a shattered iPhone are embedded in his brain. And they’re having an extraordinary effect on his every thought. Because now Tom knows, sees, and can do more than any normal boy ever could. But with his new powers comes a choice: Seek revenge on the vicious gangs who rule the South London housing project where he lives, and who violated his friend Lucy? Or keep quiet and move on? Not even the search engine in his head can predict the shocking outcome of iBoy’s actions. A wifi, thriller by YA master Kevin Brooks.
