With the holidays approaching, it’s time to start thinking company, shopping, & yummy treats. It’s my favorite time of year and I am sure yours too! This time of year can really put a strain on our family budget. I have taken the holidays as a motivating tool to think of ways that I can save instead of spend. From cleaning out a closet and selling items on Facebook yard sale groups, to shutting off lights (and reminding my kiddos to do the same) to save on our electricity bill. It’s amazing what a few small changes can do. Not only do you start saving now, but you save all year long. It can really add up.
Saving to me means more money to do other things we love. Like family vacations, outings, and weekend getaways! What are some ways you can save you ask?
Let’s talk lighting. My dad recently told me that he switched out all his old incandescent bulbs to light-emitting diode (LED) light bulbs. LED have a longer life and they are more efficient. It was an easy change and he is now saving over $20 per month lighting his home. Wow!! That amounts to over $240 per year in savings!
Do you have an old refrigerator? Do you know what it is costing you each year to run? Probably a lot more than you are aware. Another great way to save energy is the Refrigerator recycling rebate program. Make sure you plan ahead before you recycle your old refrigerator. You can also save by finding rebates ahead of time before your purchase a new one and recycle your old one. 🙂
Regularly doing maintenance of your heating and cooling systems is another great way to save. Not only do the savings add up because it is running efficiently, it will also help extend the life of your system. Another tip I have is writing the date that we change our furnace filter on the filter when we put it in. Then we know when our 3 months is up and time to switch out. What a difference it has made in our air quality also. 🙂
There are even more great ways to help you save and you can find them on the PG&E website.
