With just a few ingredients (that can most likely be gathered from your local health food store) you can make an all natural After Sun Calming Balm to help with a sunburn or to use as a skin moisturizer (Compliments of Nutiva).
*Lavender is well known for its skin healing properties and is especially soothing for burns. Be sure to use lavender and not lavendin, which can actually cause more inflammation.
1. In a double boiler over low heat, gently warm the coconut oil and shea butter. Be careful not to melt the oil and butter – heat just enough to blend easily. Once incorporated, transfer the oil and butter mixture to a bowl.
2. Using an electric mixer, blend the coconut oil and shea butter mixture on low to medium speed until well incorporated, 1-2 minutes. Use a spatula to scrape down the sides of the bowl and avoid having clumps in the final product.
3. Add calendula, aloe vera and vitamin E oil. Blend for 3 to 5 minutes until thick and creamy.
4. Add essential oil and blend to incorporate.
Yields 8oz. Transfer to a container like a wide-mouth canning jar for easy scooping. Keep out of direct sun as the oils and butter will separate if melted.
I’m going to try to make this for my fair skinned family who can’t help but get too much sun in the intense southern heat, even with sunscreens. Since I know the specific ingredients in the mixture, I’ll be confident that the end product is natural….a plus in my book. I may play with the essential oil part to create a scent that suits me.
Coconut Oil has many uses. I like to use it while cooking under medium heat. I’ve added it to some of my sauces (a little goes a long way here….a tablespoon can add a distinct flavor) and used it as a lip moisturizer at bedtime. Recently I read an article that suggested gargling with it to improve teeth & gums, so that will be on my “list to try”.
